Using Creativity as an Outlet

Creative Ideas

Having different outlets to cope with negative emotions can help you feel better.  Even for a moment, it could help release some of the stress, distract you from it, or even channel it healthily.  When I initially learned creativity was good for you, I originally thought there was a requirement to be extremely talented in an art form, such as drawing, painting, or pottery.  I didn't think I was any good at any of that - when compared to anyone else with more talent.

Not My Type

I don't think I can draw, paint, or make pottery as well as other people.  I do try, but they don't turn out as great.  I did learn creativity has wider range of ideas than those three I mentioned.  I have tried all three, but was quickly discouraged because of my personal feelings of inadequacy.

So . . . What's Your Type?

My creativity is presented in various ways, such as these . . . vinyl projects, sewing, and creating designs to suit individual personalities. These are some examples of what I've done.

I created these character-inspired outfits for a Disneyland trip in the summer of 2022.

I made these Christmas stockings in 2022, and I already have to update two of them.  Jojo's Streamer name is no longer Iris ZiLong; it is Iris Dieyes.  I changed the spelling of Rain, so this one does not match.

As you can see on the front of my current tote bag, I've included a representation of one side of my personality, while the back holds another aspect of it.

This is my bright side - the K-Pop fan, Disney fan, and loving side.

The back shows my darker side - the more intimidating side, according to those who had their cards read by me.  This is my witchy/gamer side.

Using AI Generators

I don't draw as well as I see the visions in my mind, so I'm thankful for AI generators that can create different renditions of what I have in mind.  Sometimes, they come out better.  I'm better with writing, which is another outlet for creativity.

I have a group of close friends who are my support system when I'm in a depressive state.  We have favorite animals (and corresponding PowerPuff Girls colors).

This is Ariel, the "Jumpy Giraffe" (Bubbles), who eats when she's nervous, mad, happy... basically, any time she wants to eat.

What's Your Outlet?

These are some creative outlets I use to relieve stress.  Sometimes the process stresses me, but in a good way, because the end result is beautiful.  What kinds of outlets do you have to express creativity or lett off some steam?

  1. Love meeting another dragon lady!!
I've been artsy-crafty all my life, and in 2015 took the Intentional Creativity 9 month teacher training, and the heart of the program is affirming the message that creative expression is the important bit, and has little to do with 'talent!' And disengaging / distracting the 'inner critic' is so necessary!
Engaging in art, music, crafts, cooking, gardeningcan all boost mental and emotional health, and reduce pain!!
I play folk harp, paint, draw, knit and do other crafts, garden ...

    1. Thank you so much! I try to remind myself that it isn't about the talent because there is beauty in our own creativity. I actually played with sketching after posting this.

  2. This is great. I also need books and coffee when im in a bad mood or a good mood. Outside of reading, I’m not much of an artist, but I like doing jigsaw puzzles to clear my mind and let new ideas come in. - Elisa
